Artistic Biography Of Steve Bonner

Reared on the plains of the Midwest, Steve Bonner picked up his first 35mm camera as a teenager, taking the usual travel photos with his vacationing parents. Steve learned black & white and low light skills photographing local rock and roll bands, working in a dark room created in a spare bathroom.

Natures ZiaSteve, with his family moved to New Mexico in 1991. “We always vacationed in Northern New Mexico, loved the mountains, and was always intrigued with the special light.”

Amazed at the unique abilities of painting with light, Steve moved to digital capture, using his traveling sales position to go to “hidden” areas of New Mexico. It is the remote, off the tourist track, that Steve has found some of his favorite light captures. “A camera is always within arms reach.”

Taste That FormA graduate of the Photo Digital Imaging Program of the Academy of Art University at San Francisco, California, Steve is a former two term president of the Enchanted Lens Camera Club in Albuquerque. The club, known as the ELCC, is a 54-year-old organization that conducts monthly programs and competition. Steve holds several awards of merit, and was awarded the photo of the year (2003-2004) for his “Taste that Form” in its category “B Color” competition, as well as competes at the State Fair of New Mexico.

Free YourselvesSteve was selected to display for the Digital Fine Art Society of New Mexico’s, New Mexico Digital 2004 Juried Competition, at the South Broadway Cultural Center, for his “Free Yourselves,” the competition's third place winner.

“America 24/7” selected one of Steve’s photos for publication in a state book titled “New Mexico 24/7,” published in November 2004.

“I try to give the viewer a reason, whether they like the image or not, to stop and look at the image, draw deeper, so the viewer loses all sense of their peripheral vision.”

Steve uses an Olympus E-1 35mm digital camera, a Widelux F8 35mm film panoramic camera, a Hasselblad 501C medium format camera, and a Sinar F 4x5 large format camera for all his light capture.
